1. How much
does a quality wood floor cost?
This is not a simple answer as there are many, many variables. First, all of
our floors are manufactured to the same standards. We arrive at the cost of
our products by taking into consideration the value of the logs, the cost for
sawing (some logs are easier to saw than others), the cost of delivery and
any special requirements. We are confident that our prices are very competitive
and would be happy to provide specific pricing for your job.
In other words, start by thinking about how you want your new floor to look —we will work with you to match the right wood flooring for your budget and your vision.
2. How do I choose the right type of wood for my home or office?
An easy question, actually: all our woods will do a terrific job. We do take
into consideration special circumstances such as radiant floor heating. There
are no rules, however, we find that more formal homes often select maple
or alder. Less formal (maybe rural) homes will often choose fir, hemlock
or pine.
In a large room, a wide plank might be a better choice while a smaller room may look best with regular widths. Our most common plank widths are three to seven inches.
3. Do you use old growth trees?
Not in the way you might think. In the old days of logging, many logs were
simply left on the ground. Many of those are still as good as they were when
they were felled years ago. These need to be taken out by helicopter so we
place great value on them and use them for their best use. Flooring is one
of such use. Another source of wood for flooring comes from logs salvaged
from lake bottoms.
4. What range of quality or specifications can I choose?
Our specifications include three main classes, but all are manufactured to
the same standards.
Rustic: includes mixed grain and colourful knots.
Character: has more edge grain and a few small knots to keep the look of real
wood.
Premium: usually reserved for old growth fir, hemlock or pine, is edge grain
clears. It offers a very formal look, possibly for a room that has many other
formal features.
5. Do you ship to the USA?
Absolutely. Please check with us for shipping costs. We will also kiln dry
and prepare your product to suit your climate and environment.
6. Do you install the flooring?
No. We concentrate on manufacturing our products to optimal standards. That
said, most floor layers appreciate our machining quality because it makes
their work easier and produces a better floor. In the end, we both get happy
customers!
7. How long will it take to receive my order?
Though there are many variables, two to six weeks is average. Occasionally,
we are able to speed up the process where the need arises.
8. What payment options do you have?
We ask for an initial deposit of 25% with the order; final payment is due at
shipping. We accept cash, cheques, Visa and MasterCard
9. Can I do the installation myself?
Follow this rule: start by doing your homework. Then, if you think you can
do it, you probably can. The main difference is time. Naturally, a professional
floor installer will complete the job quickly, but a competent amateur can
do it.
10. What are your flooring specifications?
All our standard floors are a full ¾ inches thick. Standard widths
are from 3” to 7” wide. All have back relief built in. Wide plank
flooring is tongue-and-grooved for a quality fit on all four edges. All the
machining is to the same high standards on all our floors.
11. Why might I install a pre-finished floor?
Quick answer: convenience! Because these products come with a factory finish,
no sanding or other finishing is required once the floor is installed. That
means less disruption to the household or office. It can also be installed
in minimum time without having to move too much furniture around.
12. Is a pre-finished floor superior to a site-finished floor.
Yes. And No. Yes, because the factory finish may be somewhat more scratch resistant
and uniform. It has a micro-groove used to mask the very slight inaccuracies
inherent in not site sanding the floor. In a retrofit this is less disruptive
if the home is lived in during the process.
And no, because onsite finishing produces a flat floor without the micro groove. Also, refinishing can be done with the same finish as the original. This is an especially good choice for a new house. A micro groove look is still available if desired.
13. What is it that is different about Theden’s pre-finishing?
Most pre-finished floors have a type of plastic finish that is sprayed onto
the floor. Re-finishing with available products may not be compatible with
these factory products.
Theden’s finish is a hard wax that can be factory or site finished. This means that our flooring can be maintained as the need arises. It can be spot repaired at any time therefore lessening the need for a total refinish.
Our eco-friendly finish is brushed into the wood, showing the grain and beauty with greater clarity than the plastic finish — some factory finishes may mask the grain.
14. What is OSMO Hardwax Oil?
The ingredients in natural Osmo Hardwax Oil include carnauba, candelillal,
sunflower, soybean and thistle oils and waxes. The result is a durable and
renewable finish that will never crack or flake off. Local repairs are easy;
there are three maintenance levels available:
- Osmo Wash & Care for cleaning
- Osmo Liquid Wax for more serious maintenance to revitalize the floor.
- Osmo Polyx Oil is used to treat a major wear area, avoiding refinishing the
whole floor!
Pre-finishing is available for Powell River grown flooring. Our species include the old favourite Douglas Fir, Western Hemlock, Lodgepole Pine and the hardwoods Red Alder and Western (broad leaf) Maple.
Grown and manufactured in Powell River, BC Canada!
